The new Hood 35 by Lyman-Morse series follows the recent successful collaboration between Lyman-Morse and C.W. Hood Design on the Hood 57 LM.
Similar to the 57, this stunning pocket-yacht defines a niche all its own, encompassing advanced construction technology, world-renowned craftsmanship, and superior performance. Hull No. 1 is designed as a hardtop express and is scheduled to launch early this summer. As part of the series approach, C.W. Hood has incorporated a flybridge version for Hull No. 2 with construction currently underway for a 2023 scheduled completion.
Additional information on the Flybridge model will be announced as construction progresses. A soft-top model is also offered for yachtsmen looking for more of a dayboat option. The Hood 35 LM follows the builder’s strategy of employing technology, construction methods, and design techniques to create a semi-custom platform to deliver reduced build time and production efficiencies compared to a one-off offering. Yet, demonstrated by the high customization of the first two hulls, Lyman-Morse will incorporate its world-renowned customization and solution-based approach to deliver exactly what each owner wishes.
Construction
Defining the soul of the Hood 35 LM is its cold-molded construction employing advanced boatbuilding techniques. The builder is employing similar construction techniques to those used to build the highly acclaimed Anna, a 65-foot Stephens Waring Yacht Design sailing yacht. For instance, the hull’s structural stringers and frames are generated first in CAD and then cut to deliver a precision fit. The inner layers are Douglas fir and outside veneers employ western red cedar. The end result is an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and a supremely comfortable, quiet ride.
Lyman-Morse’s continued investment in manufacturing technology and infrastructure is revealed in the use of CNC for cutting of parts and the implementation of Solidworks software for interior modeling to eliminate the stick-build process still employed by many semi-custom and custom yards. These efficiencies not only result in a superior fit and finish but allow Lyman-Morse to offer the Hood 35 LM as a semi-custom offering.
Propulsion
C.W. Hood designed the Hood 35 LM to follow the same objective of offering yachtsmen precisely what their specific cruising styles dictate. Propulsion options currently include jet, I/O, and outboard power. Hull No. 1 features twin 440-hp Yanmar 6LY440s coupled to a pair of Hamilton Waterjet HJX29s. The HJX29 represents the latest offering from Hamilton’s High-Performance Jet Range. Highlights include enhanced steering control, Hamilton’s new AVX control system, and a smaller inboard footprint to optimize space within the Hood 35 LM’s machinery area. The estimated high cruising speed is 30 knots with a top speed 38 knots. C.W. Hood has also designed an option that employs outboard engines and an I/O version with twin Volvo Penta D6-440 DPIs providing a projected top speed of 40 plus knots and a cruising speed of 30 plus knots.
Accomodations
The hardtop express, flybridge, and soft-top express models each offer different layout options that provide a well-thought-out standard offering for owners to start the process. From there, Lyman-Morse will work closely with each owner to create the accommodations plan that fits their cruising style. Whether it’s family day trips, weekend getaways, or extended coastal adventures, the Hood and Lyman-Morse teams are uniquely qualified to create the ultimate interior.
Additional options on the helm deck allow owners to make the most of seating, by adding a U-shaped settee and a second helm seat to the port side. Lower-deck options include either a queen-berth option, traditional V-berth or offset berth with an additional settee (available with galley up only). The galley is designed to maximize space and efficiency with a dual-voltage refrigerator, sink, and cooktop.
All interior options include a spacious head with shower. Hull No. 2 features separate shower with a galley-up. “The 35 is striking a chord with different owners who are unable to find what they’re after elsewhere in the market,” says Drew Lyman, president and owner of Lyman-Morse. “We’re looking at an heirloom-quality feel with an interior showing the hull’s structural elements. Yet one client found a platform for advanced integrated technology for yacht management, while others are looking at I/O and outboard propulsion, all in the same semi-custom design.
