First Pioneer Yachts solar-electric catamaran PY60 made world debut

Pioneer Yachts premiered the Pioneer One at Cannes, a PY60 solar-electric catamaran engineered for silent cruising and energy independence.

The Stralsund-based boat builder, Pioneer Yachts, has introduced Pioneer One, the first unit of its flagship PY60 solar-electric catamaran through a world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026, which took place between September 8-13. With the PY60 heralding the next generation of practical, solar-electric cruising yachts, Pioneer Yachts was founded by German engineer and entrepreneur Mike Frank after he recognised a gap in the market for a genuinely capable solar-electric yacht designed for continuous use at sea. Harnessing the expertise of a team whose combined yacht-building experience exceeds 275 years, the company set out to create a practical cruising platform built around efficiency, independence and operational simplicity.

Indeed, the Pioneer One combines quiet solar-electric operation with a yacht architecture designed for efficiency, reducing owners and operators’ dependence on external energy and marine infrastructure, thus promoting increased independence and freedom on the water. As for the power behind the vessel, the PY60 is built around an Integrated Energy Architecture, in which propulsion, solar generation and energy storage operate as a single coordinated system. The yacht’s expansive solar roof generates energy for electric propulsion and onboard loads, while 246 kWh of battery storage provides energy for silent navigation and greater independence from shore power. The result is a quiet cruising experience with reduced reliance on conventional propulsion and shore power. In defined at-anchor scenarios, solar generation and battery storage can supply hotel loads without APU operation, while the onboard APUs provide additional energy when required, including on longer passages beyond the yacht’s electric range.

Efficiency and reliability by design

With naval architecture and exterior design by Cossutti & Ganz, and featuring spacious and elegant interiors, the 60-foot solar-electric catamaran PY60 marries German engineering with contemporary Italian design for the ultimate in style, efficiency and reliability. This efficiency and reliability rests on three things working in concert: thoughtful naval architecture, a 30-tonne lightship weight, and integrated system design. Designers Cossutti & Ganz optimised hydrodynamics, slender waterlines, wave interference and drag, while the 48 V electrical architecture supports reduced complexity and benefits from the broad availability of electrical expertise. Notably, the keel line, aft sections and hull-propeller interaction have also been optimised hydrodynamically and analysed using CFD, with the solar-panel area integrated into the deck, flybridge and exterior design from the outset.

Quiet, quality time on the water

Pioneer One was created with an experienced owner in mind who is keen to spend substantial time on the water and values quiet operation, comfort, high-quality engineering and having greater control over how the yacht is used. To this end, the PY60 offers simplified daily system checks, intuitive operation through central displays and throttles and reduced dependence on shore power in sunny cruising regions. Its solar-electric propulsion architecture has been developed to maximise independence and reduce reliance on shore-based infrastructure, enabling extended periods of independent cruising. The PY60 can reach a top speed of 11 knots and a sailing speed of 5-8 knots. Recent sea trials have shown that Pioneer One’s real-world performance closely matched the original simulations and performance targets, with an average total motor power requirement of just 6.75 kW at 5 knots (measured). The yacht has an estimated electric range of 150 nautical miles at 5 knots, while its hybrid range is estimated at an impressive 5,000 nautical miles at 5 knots with the APU operating continuously.

Space and comfort are key

Finally, notwithstanding the emphasis on performance and engineering which shapes the PY60, generous onboard spaces and comfort are equally integral to the PY60 experience, as Pioneer Yachts founder Mike Frank explains: “Reflecting on the PY60 as its builder, we are immensely proud of the sense of space, wide walkways and side decks, its slender exterior profile and the calm, quiet character of the yacht. Many visitors are surprised by how naturally premium yacht design and solar-electric propulsion can coexist.”

On board, the yacht emphasises the concept of smart comfort. The largest cockpit door in its class creates a seamless connection between cockpit and saloon, establishing a continuous one-level living environment. Large panoramic windows bring ample natural light inside, while carefully considered layouts and materials create a calm and refined atmosphere suited to extended periods on the water. As for the future of Pioneer Yachts post-Cannes, Frank explains more: “We will continue to showcase the fantastic capabilities of our first model for prospective owners, and further refine its systems. The yacht will stay in the Med and Adriatics for the next few months to offer potential owners an opportunity to experience it in the real sea conditions.”
