The New Otam Custom Range 115

Following in the wake of the award-winning first unit in the OTAM Aluminium Custom Range 35m Gipsy designed by Tommaso Spadolini, the Ligurian shipyard now presents another fully engineered 115-foot proposal.

However, the only thing the two projects have in common is their length overall – this new design will be one the fastest alloy yachts on the water capable of reaching 44 knots. “The philosophy behind the OTAM Aluminium Custom Range is that it is fully bespoke and aimed at clients who don’t just want a boat – they want to build their ideal project,” says OTAM Sales Director Matteo Belardinelli. “Over 30 metres we build in aluminium rather than advanced composites because it provides more much more flexibility to personalise the yacht in every way, from the exterior aesthetics and interior layout to the propulsion specifications.”

The exterior lines by BG Design Firm, the same studio behind the new OTAM 70 HT, are inspired by the aeronautical and automotive worlds to reflect the brand’s racy DNA. Design details include the chromed ventilation vents in the transom and the air inlet on top of the hardtop.

“The key words that directed the design were ‘sportiness’, ‘purity’, ‘simplicity’ and ‘modernity’,” says the studio. “To achieve the right family feeling, we introduced the aggressive bow and moved the deckhouse as far back as possible to shift the visual weight of the volumes towards the stern, a fundamental feature of all sports boats. All the lines converge forward in a linear and almost horizontal way to give the shape tension, poise and dynamism.”

The deep-V hull has been developed by Umberto Tagliavini Marine Design to provide excellent seakeeping, comfortable entry into waves and high speeds. Extensive Finite Element Analysis (FEM) ensures a rigid hull that is not prone to flexing or twisting, while Computional Fluid Dynamics (CFD) serves to optimise performance and handling at sea.

Clients can choose between a 3-engine configuration with MTU 2600-hp engines and a KaMeWa waterjet central booster for a top speed of 44 knots (cruising speed 32 knots) or twin MTU engines for a top speed of 35 knots (cruising speed 28 knots).

Because no moulds are used in the aluminium construction, clients can choose to customise their yacht in multiple ways. For example, there are various layout options for the aft cockpit, flybridge and vast foredeck (including deployable bulwarks forward to widen the beam and increase the available area) and the possibility to modify the arrangement below deck by shifting bulkheads.

A flybridge on a sports cruiser like the OTAM Aluminium Custom Range 115 can appear out of place, but the designers were able to find just the right balance to maintain an aggressive profile. In fact, looking at the boat from the side it virtually disappears into the superstructure and is almost invisible. Nonetheless, it is a proper flybridge complete with plenty of lounging and dining space.

Naturally, all the open-air areas can be shaded by biminis on carbon fibre supports. A nice design element is the sofa seating that folds out of the transom door to create a chaise longue overlooking the swim platform.

The 4 stateroom standard layout comprises an airy, open-plan salon and dining area behind the wheelhouse on the main deck where the extensive glazing is designed to provide panoramic sea views, even when seated. There are two en suite guest staterooms on the lower deck, a large VIP stateroom and a full-beam master stateroom amidships, together with a gym or SPA or a big pantry for best service on board 24h. Otam aim is to build what clients desire and request with limitless solutions designed to reflect the buyer’s preference in full.

Between the owner’s suite and the engine room is the dedicated crew accommodation and galley. The transom garage can house a 4.20m tender and Jet Ski. Motion comfort, both under way and at anchor, is provided by a Seakeeper gyro stabiliser.

“OTAM has built its reputation on bespoke solutions combined with high performance,” says Belardinelli. “The new OTAM custom range 115 is another example of our determination to offer owners yet more choice based on the same guiding principles. This is a boat that wants to be designed in collaboration with clients, not just for them.”
