Cannes Yachting Festival 2022: Combining Sailing with Environmental Awareness

Reinventing boating for a «greener» navigation.

The yachting industry has not escaped ecological awareness. Reconciling nautical activities with respecting the environment is tomorrow’s challenge. For several years now, marinas, the nautical sector, as well as professionals and users have been aware of the real consequences of their nautical activities on the planet. Even though the industry seems to have difficulty in coming together around a single impetus, many isolated initiatives are emerging and offer a glimpse of the yachting of tomorrow: more respectful of nature, more in tune with current issues.

To accompany this «green» approach in a concrete way and fully realise its awareness-raising role, the Cannes Yachting Festival already initiated an ecological approach in 2019 with the «Energy Observer» educational exhibition presenting the work on hydrogen and renewable energies carried out in the first eponymous hydrogen-powered ship. Last year, the show launched a brand-new «green» trail: an ecological trail highlighting exhibitors developing or presenting a concept in favour of ecology. Encouraged by the success of this first edition and driven by the desire to go even further in this approach, the Cannes Yachting Festival is renewing the experience by highlighting more boats, products and eco- efficient solutions in its new green route 2022, which will be offered to visitors wishing to discover or consolidate their knowledge about the environmental evolution of the marine industry at sea and marine ecosystems.
All exhibitors participating in this route are indicated with this logo.
In addition, as last year, the Cannes Yachting Festival will host a nautical zone exclusively dedicated to 100% electric and hybrid boats, which will present a dozen vessels from 8 to 12 metres.
Finally, from the Vieux Port to the Port Canto, several eco-responsible boats will be on display. Hybrid hydro-electric propulsion, automated hydrofoils, new generation solar panels, ... here are some examples:

Cannes Yachting Festival Combining Sailing with Environmental Awareness 1

SUNREEF YACHTS – 80 SUNREEF POWER ECO
Multihull motorboat l Measurements: LOA 24 m and beam 12 m l Built in Poland

The 80 Sunreef Power Eco is at the vanguard of eco- responsible motor yachts. This fully customisable luxury catamaran is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to achieve exceptional energy efficiency. Thanks to its ultra-modern, lightweight solar power system, integrated into the hull planks and any curved area, the 80 Sunreef Power can accommodate up to 200m² of solar panels and generate up to 40kWp. The yacht thus offers responsible boating and infinite autonomy thanks to an extreme surface of solar panels and a high-end electric motorization.

PINBALL BOAT – E-HYBRIDE
Electric-hybrid catamaran l Measurements: LOA 9 m and beam 3 m l Built in France

With its electric-hybrid propulsion, the Pinball E-hybrid catamaran combines the best of electric and thermal technology in a single boat. Resolutely innovative, measuring 9m by 3m, it combines the performance of an original electric propulsion system with the power of a diesel inboard engine. This propulsion system, called
«E-Hybrid», developed and patented by Pinball Boat, opens up new perspectives for pleasure boating. The electric mode offers all the advantages of a 100% electric propulsion without the constraint of range with an amazing manoeuvrability.

SILENT YACHT – SILENT 60
Multihull motorboat l Measurements: LOA 18 m and beam 9 m l Built in Austria

The SILENT 60 is the next generation of the legendary SILENT 64, the first solar- powered production yacht to cross the Atlantic. This electric yacht offers unlimited range, safer sea propulsion, zero emissions, almost no maintenance and quiet sailing.

WINDELO CATAMARAN – WINDELO 54 YACHTING
Catamaran l Measurements: LOA 16 m and beam 8 m l Built in France

The Windelo 54 is an offshore catamaran designed by the architect duo Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman. Eco-responsible, this catamaran is designed for long passages at sea. The lengthening of the hulls brings more performance and speed under sail while improving sailing comfort. The extra volume in the living spaces, the accommodation, the storage spaces and the extensive capacity to recharge its batteries under sail, give the Windelo 54 great autonomy.

FinX (France)

Paris-based start-up FinX launched in June 2019 to create finned and propellerless boat engines, convinced that the best way to preserve nature is to draw inspiration from it. This new eco-designed and efficient nautical propulsion mimics the swimming of fish and represents the future of mobility. FinX has created Fin5 (6HP - 3kW), the first outboard engine composed of a wavy membrane that replaces the propeller by reproducing the undulatory movement of marine animals. The prototype of the Fin150 (150CV - 120kW), powered by hydrogen fuel cells, will also be present at the show.

EDORADO – EDORADO 8S
Electric boat l Measurements: LOA 8.4 m and beam 2.5 m l Built in the Netherlands

The Edorado 8S has fully submerged hydrofoils (significantly reducing energy consumption compared to a traditional hull) in an optimal configuration for high speed. It has the ability to retract its hydrofoil system fully into the hull. When leaving a dock at low speed or in shallow water, the boat operates as a normal boat. Once the flight mode is activated, it takes off like an aircraft. By lifting the hull out of the water, drag is reduced by at least 60%. The result is a fast, emission-free motorboat.

X SHORE – EELEX 8000
Open hull powerboat l Measurements: LOA 8 m and beam 2.50 m l Built in Sweden

The Eelex 8000 is the first model of the Swedish shipyard X Shore created in 2016 by Konrad Bergström, a businessman and also a lover of the sea and open spaces. His passion for nature led him to create an
«ecological» 100% electric boat. Inspired by Elon Musk and his Tesla, Konrad Bergström has developed an 8-metre boat built from recycled materials and combining design and technology. It is powered by a 225kW electric motor and two lithium batteries of 63kWh each. X Shore uses the safest and most efficient lithium-ion batteries, similar to those found in electric cars.

ONDE MARINE – Eco Inspiration 1
Electric boat l Measurements: LOA 9.50 m and beam 2.70 m l Built in France

Onde Marine produces a range of eco-built, zero-emission 100% electric speedboats with cabins in the Var region of France. The Eco-Inspiration 1 «Boogie» model shakes up coastal pleasure cruising and «local maritime» fast transport thanks to its dual electric propulsion and cedar design.

“All these flagship models and many others will be on display from 6 to 11 September in the exceptional setting of the Cannes Yachting Festival, the largest in-water show in Europe, which inaugurates the nautical season.”, concludes Sylvie Ernoult, Director of the Cannes Yachting Festival.
