Rolex Swan Cup: An exceptional blend of competition and camaraderie

The Rolex Swan Cup returns to Porto Cervo (14–19 September), celebrating sailing tradition and Nautor Swan’s 60th anniversary.

The annual Rolex sailing calendar demonstrates the depth and breadth of the brand’s commitment to the sport. The close relationship is unrivalled in yachting, encompassing offshore races, grand prix competitions and events that embrace the finest traditions. The Rolex Swan Cup, taking place from 14 to 19 September in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, occupies a distinguished position within the select group. Since 1984, the Swiss watchmaker has been a trusted partner and Title Sponsor of the event, which is noted for its unique spirit, deep sense of competitiveness and camaraderie.

Organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), the biennial regatta brings together a spectacular fleet of yachts built by Finnish luxury boat builder Nautor Swan, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2026. The gathering showcases generations of high-performance yachts from the legendary yard. Paul Cayard, the renowned American yachtsman and a Rolex Testimonee for close to 30 years, has competed at the highest level for decades. A multiple Olympian, America’s Cup competitor and Round the World Race winner, he continues to set the pace in the upper echelons having secured the Star and Etchells world championships in the past year. Competing as tactician on the ClubSwan 50 Cuordileone, Cayard is quick to underline the importance of Rolex to the tripartite partnership: “Rolex’s involvement in sailing runs really deep. It has been present for nearly 70 years and is pervasive. It offers such a base of strength, so that when it puts it weight behind an event it is a huge aid to authenticity.”

A worldwide presence, Rolex has supported many elements, but its relationships with leading institutions place it at the heart of sailing, helping safeguard the sport’s traditions and supporting its continued development. Privileged, long-standing alliances with organizations such as the YCCS and Nautor Swan are based on a shared vision. This year’s regatta will be contested by about 150 yachts, from one-design racers and Maxi performance cruisers to classics from the earliest years. Its popularity reflects the legacy of one of the world’s most celebrated builders, but also the contribution of all three partners in delivering an outstanding experience both on the water and ashore, according to Cayard: “The Rolex Swan Cup holds a unique position in our sport, and it is impressive to see such a large number of boats congregating, ranging in size from 128 feet (39 metres) down to 30 (9 metres). There are a number of factors which make it so special: the three brands, Rolex, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Nautor Swan, the iconic venue of Porto Cervo, the challenging conditions and the beautiful environment. The regatta is an exceptional blend.”

Despite the friendship that defines the event ashore, where crews gather to share stories, a week of racing places significant demands on owners and crew alike. Success depends on meticulous preparation, rigorous attention to detail and seamless teamwork. With so many different boats, expertise varies between crews and there is greater potential for gender and generational diversity within the teams. For Cayard, this is another aspect to be celebrated, since breadth of participation and knowledge is fundamental to the future: “I encourage young sailors to sail on a variety of boats and, whenever possible, alongside people with more experience than themselves. Learning from different sailors and different boats builds a broad foundation, and with a strong foundation you can build a much taller building.”

Just as with the fierce battles of grand prix regattas and the endurance required in offshore racing, there is a shared heartbeat at the Rolex Swan Cup. Men and women united by a common respect for the oceans, individuals who recognise it is never possible to be in absolute control of the sea, but thrive on the challenge. This choice to persevere, to improve and to inspire defines Rolex’s partnership with sailing. On the water, as in life, achievement is not measured in trophies or titles, but in the moments when courage and excellence move together as one. While select class winners will be recognized with specially engraved timepieces, achievement at the Rolex Swan Cup takes many forms, according to Cayard: “Success is not defined by a single victory but by the dedication, skill and resilience it takes to get there. In a sport where nature sets the terms, sailors must navigate the unpredictable, mastering every manoeuvre and pushing the boundaries of performance and technology. It is this relentless pursuit that defines greatness – where achievement is measured not only by trophies, but by the journey, the challenges overcome and moments along the way.”
