Designed for ultimate remote exploration and high-latitude voyages, the GEx is a groundbreaking 130-metre (426 ft) Ice-Class Polar Explorer Yacht concept developed by Alexander McDiarmid Design. Unveiled ahead of the Monaco Yacht Show 2026, the vessel was conceived in direct response to an experienced owner’s desire for dual helicopter operations on board a superyacht. To bring this ambitious vision to life, Alexander McDiarmid orchestrated a multiparty collaboration with industry-leading experts, including Lateral Naval Architects, Ghost Yachts, and Maritime Aviation. The resulting vessel seamlessly blends cutting-edge maritime engineering, naval architecture, and aviation capability with striking aesthetic appeal.
At the heart of the GEx design is its unprecedented aviation integration, featuring a dual heliport configuration above deck and dual below-deck hangars engineered to store up to four Airbus Corporate Helicopters (ACH145). This dual capability guarantees essential redundancy and safety when navigating inhospitable polar environments. Each hangar is equipped with an integrated aircraft lift, allowing guests to board directly and comfortably from a dedicated VIP Aviation Lounge situated below deck. Furthermore, the hangar architecture enables the helicopters to remain stored with their main rotor blades attached, significantly reducing preparation time for sudden departures, though blades are removed and safely stowed during longer ocean voyages.
To ensure operational safety on deck, automated guardrails collapse horizontally during flight operations to mitigate the risk of dynamic rollover, while the vessel’s silo-like hangars create an eye-catching visual statement when at anchor. Complementing these aviation systems, the 20-metre (65 ft) beam and specialized naval architecture by Lateral Naval Architects provide the requisite structural depth and stability to support two heavy landing pads while delivering superior roll comfort, fuel efficiency, and hydrodynamic performanc
The exterior styling displays a powerful, angular, “naval-chic” silhouette. Tight, taut surfaces extend from stem to stern, while the primary superstructure appears to float midships. Inside, the GEx provides luxurious accommodation for up to 13 guests across five high-end double cabins and a dedicated owner’s suite on the owner’s deck, which includes a private foredeck and an atrium lounge. The vessel accommodates a professional crew of up to 43 members, including two helicopter pilots, aircraft engineers, and four specialist polar expedition staff.
The GEx offers an expansive selection of lifestyle and research facilities tailored for extended voyages. Panoramic observation lounges situated on both the main and top decks afford unobstructed views of polar landscapes, while guests can enjoy a full beach club, swimming pool, comprehensive wellness spa, and gym. For intellectual stimulation and entertainment, the vessel features a lecture theatre for expedition briefings, alongside a cinema and a dedicated games room. Additionally, a fully equipped onboard infirmary ensures guest and crew safety while navigating remote, inhospitable waters.
Powered by twin electric Azipod DO1100P units, the GEx delivers efficient, sustainable propulsion. She achieves a cruising speed of 12 to 14 knots and a maximum speed of 17 knots, establishing a new benchmark for hybrid maritime-aviation exploration.
