Zeus+Dione: Transforming traditional Greek craftmanship into global luxury

Dimitra Kolotoura, Co-Founder of Zeus+Dione, speaks to Phi Magazine about transforming Greek craftsmanship into a global luxury brand, bridging tradition with sustainable innovation, and the power of authentic cultural identity.

Dimitra Kolotoura, Co-Founder of Zeus+Dione, reveals the vision behind the leading Greek brand. Driven by instinct and respect for the silk-making tradition of Soufli, she explains how Greek craftsmanship has been transformed into a globally competitive supply chain. She defines “substantial Greekness” as a passport for international growth and
discusses her commitment to sustainable luxury, charting the course for the brand’s dynamic global expansion.

When you first launched Zeus+Dione, what was the gap in the global luxury market that you identified and decided to fill? What challenges did you face?

Zeus+Dione was born out of a deep, almost existential need: to proudly showcase and support Greek creativity, craftsmanship, and production. Our company and overall entrepreneurial effort were not conceived to fill a market gap. During a period when this side of Greece did not hold the position it deserved, we felt the need to bring it back to the forefront in a modern way, yet with absolute respect for its essence. We didn’t start by following trends, nor did we rely on market analysis or market share. We started with instinct. It was a romantic impulse, fueled by faith, persistence, and a deep connection to what we wanted to express. Over time, through passion, hard work, and personal sacrifice, this evolved into something that transcends its starting point. Perhaps, ultimately, it does fill a gap -but not one defined by the market. It fills a gap in storytelling, identity, and the authentic expression of contemporary Greece.

The company’s growth was based on production in Soufli and on local artisans. How did you manage to transform local production into a reliable supply chain capable of meeting the demanding schedules of major international retailers?

In Soufli, a place with a profound history in silk-making, we utilized a living tradition, investing in knowledge preserved from generation to generation and bringing it into the present in modern terms. Through close, longterm
collaboration with key figures such as Kostas Mouhtaridis and his workshop, Silkline, along with specialized silk artisans, we managed to ensure continuity, quality, and expertise. From 2013 onwards, we systematically invested in the evolution of techniques: through research, travel, and the integration of new equipment, we redefined traditional weaving methods, reaching a level of quality that meets international standards. We didn’t stop at production, however; we also created a broader ecosystem around it with the contribution of local authorities and the community. In this way, production gained structure, consistency, and predictability -elements essential for meeting the rigorous timelines of major international retailers. Essentially, we transformed a fragmented local activity into an organized and reliable supply chain, while simultaneously preserving the human element and the
craftsmanship that lie at the core of our identity.

What was your strategy for positioning Zeus+Dione alongside historic fashion houses abroad? Do you believe “Greekness” acted as a “passport” or an obstacle in your presence in the international market?

From the beginning, our strategy for Zeus+Dione was not to “mimic” the great historic houses abroad, but
to stand alongside them as equals by projecting an authentic and clearly defined identity. We invested in creating high-quality products with an emphasis on craftsmanship, materials, and timeless design, while building a narrative that connects Greek cultural heritage with a modern, internationally understood aesthetic. In this context, “Greekness” clearly acted as a “passport” rather than an obstacle. Greece possesses a unique wealth: exceptional artisans, a deep tradition of quality and craftsmanship, and a new generation of creators with a fresh, innovative
perspective. Our goal was to translate this cultural capital into a modern product capable of standing on its own in the international market. Most importantly, however, we did not rely on origin alone as a differentiating factor. We ensured that “Greekness” was not superficial or folkloric, but deeply embedded into design, quality, and overall brand experience. This approach allowed us to “converse” on equal terms with international houses and steadily earn the trust of a demanding global audience.

Sustainable fashion is becoming increasingly prevalent. How challenging is it to balance the high cost of handmade production with the need for business profitability and growth?

For us, sustainability is a fundamental choice rather than a trend, even though it does indeed entail higher costs due to artisanal manufacturing and premium materials. Balancing this with profitability is not an easy equation to solve. It requires strategic choices, patience, and consistency. It is achieved by creating timeless products with longevity and lasting value, rather than promoting fast consumption. At the same time, we continuously invest in natural and recycled materials, support local production, work with suppliers who implement eco-friendly practices,
and develop initiatives such as upcycling. We are demonstrating that responsibility and growth can coexist, specially in an international environment that increasingly recognizes the importance of sustainable fashion.

After several successful collaborations and the consolidation of the brand, what is your next strategic step?

For Zeus+Dione, the next big step is clearly further outward-looking growth and dynamic international expansion. Having established a strong identity that blends Greek heritage with a contemporary international aesthetic, our goal is to strengthen our presence in key markets and broaden our international footprint through both physical points of sale and digital channels. As our journey so far has shown, our direction is bolder and more extroverted than ever. Our ambition is to position ourselves even more substantially on the global fashion map and to continue “conversing” as equals with international houses, while also developing our own spaces and stores in strategic locations abroad. This will allow the international audience to fully experience the Zeus+Dione universe through authentic brand experiences.
