Västerås to host pivotal 2026 Ice and Snow Sailing World Championships

Västerås will host the 2026 Ice and Snow Sailing World Championships, showcasing a rapidly growing winter wind sport gaining momentum.

The World Ice and Snow Sailing Association has confirmed that Västerås in Sweden will host the 2026 Ice and Snow Sailing World Championships, marking a major milestone for one of the fastest growing winter wind sports. From 16 to 21 February, Lake Mälaren will transform into a vast natural racecourse where elite competitors from around the world will race in kite, wing and windsurf classes. The event highlights a discipline that is rapidly gaining visibility due to its speed, technical precision and expanding international following.

The evolution of a high-velocity winter sport

Ice and snow sailing has evolved into a sport defined by aerodynamics, strategic skill and extreme acceleration on frozen surfaces. Its growing community is pushing for broader global recognition, including future Olympic consideration, as participation increases across Europe, North America and Asia. The 2026 Championships aim to underline both the competitive intensity and the unique appeal of wind-powered sport on ice.

Västerås was selected as the host city for its reliable winter conditions, its long maritime tradition and its experience in staging outdoor sporting events. Positioned an hour from Stockholm, it offers accessibility for international teams and a striking Nordic setting for spectators. The city is preparing an environment that blends world-class competition with local cultural elements, from winter leisure activities to lakeside attractions and the region’s strong connection to cold-climate sport.

Building a championship for athletes and the public

The Local Organizing Committee, composed of athletes, technical experts and volunteers, is developing a championship designed to engage both seasoned competitors and the wider public. Their planning focuses on fair racing, smooth logistics and an event atmosphere that reflects the sport’s inclusive and adventurous spirit. Surrounding activities are also being arranged to complement the races and welcome visiting supporters.

Travel and accommodation information will be released in cooperation with Visit Västerås, offering consolidated options for accommodation, transport and visitor services. Registration procedures, categories and participation guidelines are already available in the Notice of Race on the official event website, enabling athletes of various age groups to prepare for entry.

A defining moment for global ice and snow sailing

With strong anticipation from the global community and expectations of hundreds of participants, the 2026 Ice and Snow Sailing World Championships are shaping up to be one of the most significant gatherings in the sport’s modern history, reinforcing its momentum and expanding its reach on the international winter sports stage.
