Mediterraneo hospital connects Athens with the islands via artificial intelligence.
In a country defined by its islands and endless blue horizons, access to fast, expert medical care has long been a challenge. Today, Greece takes a decisive step into the future. Mediterraneo Hospital in Athens, in collaboration with Philips and the Australian-Dutch health-technology pioneer Nicolab, have launched the nation’s first AI-powered stroke network, linking Athens with Santorini and Paros.
This landmark achievement establishes Greece’s first hub-and-spoke Stroke Network, connecting Mediterraneo Hospital in Glyfada (the hub) with partner hospitals and Mediterraneo First Care Centers on the islands (the spokes). It marks a major clinical and strategic milestone for stroke care and a new era where world-class diagnosis and treatment can reach even the most remote Aegean harbours.
AI that transforms speed, precision, and access
At the heart of this innovation is Mediterraneo Hospital’s Stroke Viewer by Nicolab, an end-to-end stroke workflow platform. Using advanced AI algorithms, the system automatically analyses brain imaging data within minutes, detecting large vessel occlusions, estimating collateral circulation, and quantifying perfusion deficits. The results are delivered as clear, visual reports that empower Neurologists and Interventional Neuroradiologists to decide on the optimal treatment — faster and with greater certainty. The technology integrates seamlessly into existing hospital systems, enabling secure, real-time access from any device. Whether a Neurologist is in Athens or a Clinician is on Paros, both can view the same AI-enhanced scan within seconds and agree on the best course of action.
“We are proud to work hand in hand with Dr. Nikolaos G. Tsamopoulos, MD, MSc, PhD, Director of the Interventional Neuroradiology Department and his Team, at Mediterraneo Hospital to monitor the impact of this rollout and we’re thrilled to support Greece’s leadership in AI-driven stroke care” said Michael Macilquham, CEO of Nicolab.
“Implementing Artificial Intelligence Technology in Stroke Care has revolutionized both the speed and precision of our stroke interventions,” notes Dr. Tsamopoulos. “ Critical treatment decisions that once took precious time, can now be made in minutes — saving not just brain tissue, but lives. This AI platform, brings world-class stroke care to every corner of Greece, from Athens to the islands” adds Dr. Tsamopoulos.
