Drops of Breath - The World´s First Underwater Performance

dropofbr1

For the first time in the world, choreographers Sophie Bulbulyan (DK-BEL / France) and Apostolia Papadamaki (Quasi Stellar / Greece) in collaboration with Lia Haraki (Pelma / Cyprus) and a team from eleven collaborating countries*, present an underwater dance-visual performance with an underwater audience.

In an underwater´theatre´, fourteen professional & amateur performers (three disabled & five children) from France, Greece and Cyprus will interpret an underwater choreography at Cape Sounio beach, under the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon at the edge of Attica land looking over the Aegean Sea. The innovative project (The Underwater Heart of the Mediterranean) with an artistic, educational, social and human dimension was selected by the EU’s Creative Europe, Horizon 2020 Program, General Direction of Education and Culture.

Reflecting on our common roots and paths, the project goes far beyond the search on the uniqueness of our cultures through exploring similarities.
´We are all equal underwater´
´Water as a form of energy, a state of nature, water knows no frontiers, no borders, no politics, no religions. As an element, it bridges and unifies people, countries & cultures.´

The artistic research and the methodology developed is connected to the multi-dimensional identity of the Mediterranean Sea. The underwater sound design by Escoitar (by Enrique Tòmas) will offer an immerse sound experience to the audience while the underwater scenography and costumes by George Georgiou will create a unique visual scenery. Three underwater cameras will provide simultaneous screening under the direction of Stelios Apostolopoulos.

For the very first time, three types of audience in a performance:
- with scuba gear at a depth of 6m
- with snorkelling gear on the surface
- on the beach watching the performance on a simultaneous screening September 25, 26 & 27, 2015
