Dr. Vassili G. Apostolopoulos among the SEA Index® members

The Yacht Club de Monaco advances sustainable yachting, welcoming a yacht of Greek ownership to the SEA Index®.

It was created by the Yacht Club de Monaco in collaboration with Credit Suisse with the aim of helping owners understand and reduce their environmental impact. The assessment is based on a five-star rating system and takes into account CO₂ emissions, while it is gradually expanding to include more pollutants and new technologies such as fuel cells. The goal of the SEA Index® is to enhance sustainability in the yachting sector by offering an independent and fully transparent decision-making tool.

Emphasis on transparency and sustainability

The process operates on a voluntary basis, as owners can submit their yachts for assessment whenever they choose. The resulting rating allows for direct comparison of the environmental performance of different yachts, while tools such as the Lifecycle Emissions Calculator help calculate the total emissions of a vessel throughout its lifecycle. The system’s methodology has been validated by independent international organizations, including Lloyd’s Register, which reinforces its credibility.

The SEA Index® aims to promote the sustainable development of the industry by encouraging research and the implementation of solutions that reduce environmental impact. At the same time, it increases transparency in the market, allowing buyers, sellers and charterers to make more informed decisions. In addition, it contributes to the advancement of innovation by motivating the adoption of cleaner technologies and fuels.

As part of its future plans, the SEA Index® is already being adopted by regional authorities and ports such as Région Sud in France with the aim of strengthening sustainable practices across the Mediterranean. It also expands its scope to include additional types of emissions such as NOx and indicators related to noise and air quality, in order to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the environmental footprint of superyachts.
