SY Design’s 45-meter Anvil concept redefines luxury exploration, blending a robust, powerful hull with a minimalist, floating glass superstructure design.
The Italian design scene continues to push the boundaries of maritime luxury with the unveiling of Anvil, a 45-metre explorer yacht concept from the Bologna-based studio SY Design. Moving away from traditional expedition silhouettes, the project introduces a sophisticated design language rooted in the interplay of contrasting elements, aiming to capture the imagination of a new generation of seafarers.
The architectural identity of Anvil is defined by a striking visual paradox. Its hull exudes a sense of grounded strength, characterized by a robust, slightly inverted bow and volumes that remain “readable” even from a distance. This structural weight is intentionally offset by a superstructure designed to appear weightless. By utilizing clever lines and transparency, the upper levels seem to float above the main body, creating a silhouette that is both imposing and ethereal.
Beyond its outward appearance, the project introduces a significant shift in naval architecture through a redesigned propulsion layout. By condensing the engine room and technical systems into a single deck—rather than the industry-standard two—the studio has unlocked unprecedented interior volume. This spatial efficiency allows for a seamless transition between the main saloon and the aft cockpit. At the heart of this social hub lies a semi-recessed pool, designed to be the primary gathering point for guests.
The interior philosophy prioritizes an organic connection with the marine environment. Collapsible bulwarks and expansive folding doors allow the living areas to merge with the horizon, while the layout includes a “guest-accessible kitchen,” reflecting a more modern, informal approach to life at sea. While the lower deck accommodates four double guest cabins and a well-appointed crew area, the upper deck is transformed into a sprawling private sanctuary for the owner. This dedicated level features nearly 50 square metres of interior lounge space and an equally generous private aft deck.
Following the studio’s debut of the 63-metre Harmonia last year, Anvil serves as a testament to the idea that intentional imbalance can lead to a deeper sense of harmony. By prioritizing both operational efficiency and high-concept aesthetics, SY Design offers a glimpse into the future of autonomous, luxury exploration where functionality and artistic tension coexist.
