MJM 43Z, THE NEXT GENERATION OF OUTBOARD POWERED MJM YACHTS
On the heels of the recently introduced 35Z, MJM Yachts has launched the new 43Z. Designed and styled by Doug Zurn of Zurn Yacht Design, the 43Z expands on the pedigree of the brand for a whole new experience of cruising; just another example of how Zurn Yacht Design listens and brings their clients’ needs to fruition.
The 43Z sports triple Mercury 350hp Verado outboard motors, enabling the yacht to reach speeds of 50 mph. MJM recognizes the benefits of utilizing the Mercury Verado engines – for their advanced electronics, responsive controls, fuel efficiency and quiet running.
With outboards, the 43Z’s shallow draft of 3’ (2’-2” with engines up) allows for beaching the yacht at your favorite island get-away or running the shoals to those hard-to-get-to locations. “It’s an attractive model, especially for the southern market, thanks to the shoal draft” stated designer Doug Zurn.
With a hull design the same as the proven 40Z (MJM has sold 100 of the 40Z hulls since 2008), the 43Z is also at home in deep water, running into a head sea, thanks to a 45-degree bow deadrise, transitioning to 18-degrees aft for a smooth, fast ride. For added comfort at rest, opt for the Seakeeper 5 Gyrostabilizer.
Having the powerplants on the back of the yacht yields copious amounts of additional storage space under the cockpit sole for the generator and gear. The reverse transom style has been replaced with a bustled transom that helps to hide the engines.

Creating a sure footed ride that “tracks like a freight train”, Zurn emphasized that the 43Z increases the “fun factor” of boating.
Access to the 43Z is via opening hull-side boarding gates into the spacious flush open cockpit, with upholstered stern seating across the transom. Two additional seats are forward, facing aft. The midship salon with upholstered settee and table can be enjoyed as an open-air room, thanks to the sliding glass side windows, three tilt-up forward windshields and open aft bulkhead. At night, this space can transition to a sleeping cabin with optional privacy curtains.
For all weather cruising, roll-up Strataglass curtains can be dropped for protection from the elements. Air conditioning and heating systems allow for an extended boating season and to cruise in comfort. MJM’s goal of making this an all-weather yacht can be achieved by adding a bimini top to the cockpit area, essentially making the entire main deck usable at any time.
Operation of the 43Z is effortless, thanks to the joystick docking system, Skyhook station keeping system, thrusters, full electronics and commanding 360˚ visibility from the starboard helm station.
Below, the classic looks continue, thanks to MJM’s selection of the “Herreshoff style”. This simple concept includes the use of white surfaces for bulkheads and overhead, and Zurn incorporated cherry hardwood for the woodwork and interior hull ceilings. It gives a warm and homey feel to an area that is as usable as the main deck with 6+ feet of headroom.
The port galley, complete with fridge/freezer drawers, microwave, electric stove top and more are adorned with cherry wood cabinetry and teak & holly flooring. Across, a booth style dinette with wood table and light upholstery doubles as an extra berth with privacy curtain. Forward, the master stateroom has a large center-line island berth with storage underneath, and teak & holly flooring with ensuite head and shower.
With a classic Downeaster style, the 43Z is an eye catcher at the dock or underway. Wide side decks with grabrails along the house and beefy railings that lead from the house to the bow ensure safe transit to the foredeck. Numerous cabin and salon hatches, portholes and windshields allow for natural breezes to flow through the yacht. Thanks to the low profile Zurn design, the 43Z has an air draft of only 10’, with a radar. Perfect for transiting in-shore waterways with bridges.
