Highlights of the inaugural Corfu Challenge 2017 [VIDEO]

Sailors and spectators from around the world met to watch the first ever Maxi 72 Class racing in Corfu, Greece, where MOMO, Cannonball, Bella Mente, Evniki, and Proteus had the chance to enjoy perfect sailing weather conditions.

After 5 days of racing, George Sakellaris and Team Proteus, were crowned winners of the 2017 Corfu Challenge, with ROLEX the Official Timepiece Sponsor.

Corfu Challenge was full of exceptional events, with a memorable opening ROLEX Welcome Dinner, where owners, teams and guests were warmly welcomed. Daily inspiring music performances by The Corfu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ensembles of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu among others, as well as the ‘Taste of Corfu’ experience, offered all participants a unique flair of the local hospitality, long music traditions and flavors.

This inaugural race was concluded with ROLEX hosting an indelible Crew Party in the heart of Corfu, on an alluring deck overlooking the Old Venetian Fortress. During the Award Ceremony at the Museum of Asian art, winners, but also all Maxi 72 owners, were presented with the hand crafted first-place trophy, to signify the high-level of international racing showcased throughout the week.

“What has made the Corfu Challenge different than any other regatta is the heart, passion, and warm generosity of everyone who came together.” Cathy Sakellaris thanked everyone involved and mentioned how, from day one, sponsors, the organizing committee and friends of the event, set their hearts and efforts to one sole purpose, nothing other than to promote the sport we are all passionate about.

ROLEX Hellas proudly supported Corfu Challenge 2017, in the belief that this event will bring Greece, with its long sailing history and unrivalled weather conditions and waters, in the forefront of World Class sailing events. Iro Vaharis, ROLEX Hellas CEO, commented: “We are confident that the natural beauty of the scenery, along with the impeccable hospitality and services, won over all who visited our country for the first time. Congratulations to all the teams for the excellent sportsmanship”.
